Today, I want to share a Chinese traditional story with you.

今天，我想和大家分享一个中国传统故事。

It’s the legend of Nian, about the Spring Festival.

这个故事是关于年兽的传说，和春节有关。

Long long ago, there was a fierce monster called Nian.

很久很久以前，有一头凶猛的怪兽叫“年”。

It lived in the mountains.

它住在深山里。

Every New Year’s Eve, it came to the village and hurt people.

每年除夕，它都会来到村庄，伤害人们。

Villagers were very afraid and ran to the mountains to hide.

村民们非常害怕，只好逃到山里躲藏。

One year, a wise old man came and told them a secret.

有一年，一位智慧的老人来到村里，告诉了他们一个秘密。

Nian is afraid of red, fire and loud noises.

年兽害怕红色、火光和巨大的响声。

So the villagers put up red couplets, lit red lanterns and set off firecrackers.

于是村民们贴红对联、挂红灯笼、放鞭炮。

When Nian came, it was scared and ran away.

当年兽到来时，它被吓坏了，飞快地逃走了。

From then on, these became Spring Festival traditions.

从此，这些就成了春节的传统习俗。

This story tells us: Wisdom can help us beat difficulties.

这个故事告诉我们：智慧能帮助我们战胜困难。
